Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you already have a fixed-height desk for this converter, and must its manual lift work without a nearby outlet?
The Pro Plus 48 supplies its own moving surface but still rests on a separate fixed-height host desk. Its spring-assisted two-handle adjustment does not require mains power; it is not a freestanding floor-standing desk.
Explore this need in the finder →Can this model satisfy an essential minimum static-load rating of 200 lb?
Vari publishes a 45 lb capacity figure for the Pro Plus 48 but does not define it as static or moving. Its documented static rating is unknown, so it cannot satisfy that hard threshold.
Explore this need in the finder →What minimum top length must the same moving platform support?
The Pro Plus 48 work surface is 48 inches wide; a hard requirement for a longer top is not met.
Explore this need in the finder →The VariDesk Pro Plus 48 is a wide manual converter for a fixed desk that is already at a useful sitting height and can carry a substantial add-on. Its black U.S. listing is 48 inches wide and includes the converter’s two-tier platform; it does not include the separate host desk beneath it. Choose this size when the larger moving surface and the maker’s 45-pound capacity statement matter more than keeping the retrofit compact. It is still a rowing-lift converter, not an electric standing desk.

Make room for the converter and its host surface
The main platform measures 48 inches wide by 29.75 inches deep, with a separate keyboard-and-mouse deck below. It is the broadest of the three manual Pro Plus models assessed here. Vari lists the converter at 60.28 pounds, so delivery and initial placement are not trivial even though the product page says it arrives assembled. The instruction sheet illustrates another person helping position the unit on the existing desk. Plan for the converter’s own mass as well as the items it will carry, and confirm that the host desk is rated for the combined setup.
The source materials give two different host-depth cues: the comparison table lists 25.75 inches as necessary desk depth, while a manufacturer image calls out a 24-inch base. The top is deeper than either figure. Measure the actual clear host top, including any desk lip, drawer, cable tray or wall clearance, rather than selecting a host desk on nominal width alone. The 48-inch span also leaves less room for a lamp or writing area to remain outside the moving surface. If you do not need that much width, the 36-inch model is less demanding on the host desktop.
Manual rowing motion, not floor-to-top adjustment
The Pro Plus 48 uses the same spring-assisted rowing lift as the smaller Pro Plus sizes. Vari’s instruction sheet describes raising with both handles and locking the surface at one of 11 positions. The manufacturer lists heights from 4.5 to 17.5 inches above the desk that supports it. Those numbers do not answer how high your keyboard will sit from the floor: the host desk adds its own height, and there is no separate floor-level adjustment in this converter. If you have a hard seated height target, calculate the complete arrangement and confirm it in person or with the manufacturer.
There is no motor and no nearby outlet requirement for the lift. In return, movement is a manual two-handle operation rather than a button press, and Vari’s documentation does not describe saved positions. The advantage is a self-contained converter surface that does not require you to move the keyboard by hand when raising or lowering. The tradeoff is that the large upper platform and keyboard shelf travel together, so every display, document and accessory on them must be arranged for a moving surface.
Interpret the load claim conservatively
Vari publishes a 45-pound capacity for this model and lists its product weight separately. The product page and spec sheet do not clearly define the capacity as a static or dynamic rating, nor do they settle the remaining payload for every combination of screens, arms and accessories. Do not turn “45 pounds” into a verified 45-pound static rating. If a static figure is essential, the available evidence does not establish it. Likewise, the host desk must support the converter’s own mass along with whatever the product capacity statement is meant to cover.
The 48-inch page describes a 3D laminate finish and a lifetime, non-transferable warranty for defects affecting normal intended operation. The reviewed documents do not identify the inner top substrate, so a black or wood-look surface should not be represented as a solid-wood top. The official product illustration shows openings in the upper surface, but the written material reviewed does not specify their dimensions or identify them as power outlets or monitor-mount points. If your setup depends on a particular cable opening or clamp, ask Vari for exact compatibility rather than assigning a function from the picture alone.
Who should move up from the 36
The 36-inch model is described as dual-monitor compatible but is only 36 inches wide and carries a 35-pound published capacity. The 48 adds 12 inches of width and a 45-pound published capacity; it does not add a motor, more height settings or a floor-to-surface range. The 30 is narrower still and intended for a single monitor. Those are useful distinctions when deciding which equipment must move together, but the capacities still have the same unresolved static-versus-moving basis. If you need an absolute standing height or a fixed desk that moves itself, compare a complete electric desk. If you simply need a wide manual retrofit and your host desk can carry it, the Pro Plus 48 is the most accommodating surface in this size group.
Fit the complete workspace, not just the top
Before choosing it, tape out 48 by 29.75 inches and include the lower deck, cable path, monitor stands and the room behind the converter. Check the host desk’s depth and load rating against the maker’s two different depth cues, and keep your equipment within the documented capacity without assuming an unlisted rating basis. Confirm arm compatibility and warranty terms for the exact finish. If that substantial footprint and manual movement suit your existing desk, the Pro Plus 48 offers the widest platform here; if not, a smaller converter or a complete adjustable desk is a more suitable comparison.
