Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you need a complete standing-desk frame, or a converter that sits on a desk you already have?
This model supplies the moving work and keyboard tiers but needs a separate, stable fixed-height host desk. It does not have floor-standing lifting legs.
Explore this need in the finder →Will an electrical outlet be available for the lift?
The provided adapter and cable power the vertical lift. This converter cannot satisfy a hard no-outlet adjustment requirement.
Explore this need in the finder →What minimum upper-surface width do you need?
The VariDesk Pro Plus 48 Electric has a 47.25-inch upper work surface (the model name 48 is rounded to the manufacturer-listed 47¼ inches); it meets a threshold at or below that width, not one above it.
Explore this need in the finder →Can you rely on its published maximum as a static-load rating?
No. Vari publishes a 44-pound maximum capacity but the reviewed sheet and instructions do not define a static or dynamic rating basis. A required static threshold remains unconfirmed and must not pass.
Explore this need in the finder →The VariDesk Pro Plus 48 Electric is a powered desktop converter for an existing fixed-height desk, not a freestanding desk frame. Its value is a broad two-tier work area that rises at the touch of an up or down control while leaving the table underneath in place. “48” is a rounded model name: Vari’s current specification gives the upper surface as 47¼ inches wide, so measure to the published dimension rather than assuming a full 48-inch span.

A wide converter still depends on the host desk
The current maker sheet describes a 47¼-inch-wide work surface and a 24¾-inch front-to-back working envelope across the upper and keyboard tiers. The keyboard tier is 28 inches wide and 11¾ inches deep; the base is 29 inches wide by 16¾ inches deep. Vari recommends at least 18 inches of desk depth for use. Measure the whole converter, the desk beneath it and the room around the raised display. A 47¼-inch top may fit across a desk yet still leave too little room in front, hit a wall, or crowd another workstation as the moving tiers rise.
Powered movement is not a whole-desk height range
The Pro Plus 48 Electric uses the manufacturer-described powered vertical gas-spring lift. Vari lists a lift range of 6 to 19¾ inches above the fixed desk below. That is a relative rise, not a floor-to-work-surface minimum or maximum. The host desk sets the starting height, and the keyboard tray and monitor shelf occupy separate levels. Check the result with your own chair, keyboard and screen instead of comparing its 19¾-inch figure directly with a complete standing desk’s floor-height specification.
The included adapter and cable need a wall outlet for the lift. The instruction sheet illustrates the up and down buttons; it does not document saved positions or a memory-preset count. If you need the converter to adjust where power is unavailable, this electric version cannot meet that essential requirement. Vari’s manual Pro Plus 48 is a different product with a spring-assisted, outlet-free adjustment, not a battery mode hidden in this one.
Capacity does not answer every load question
Vari states a maximum capacity of 44 pounds and says the model is compatible with single or dual monitor arms. The sheet does not define that 44-pound number as static versus moving capacity, and it does not establish a remaining payload after a particular arm, monitor and accessories are attached. The arm pictured is not listed in the instruction sheet’s box contents. Treat the maker’s compatibility claim as a reason to check the exact arm and clamp—not as proof that any configuration fits or that the arm comes in the carton. If a minimum static-load rating matters, the available documentation does not supply one.
The specification sheet identifies MDF material and says the converter was tested to and meets BIFMA X5.5-2021 standards. It also lists a five-year warranty against defects in material or workmanship that appear through normal use. Those are the manufacturer’s statements; they are not an independent durability test or a guarantee about the capacity of your host desk. The assembly sheet lists the converter, keyboard tray, brackets, screws and power cable/adapter, and calls for a Phillips screwdriver that is not included. Tray attachment and cable connection are part of setup.
Where the extra width is useful—and where it is not
The strongest reason to choose the 48 over the Pro Plus 36 Electric is the extra 11¼ inches of stated width. The 36 Electric has a 36-inch upper surface and a 19½-inch keyboard tray, while the 48 uses a 28-inch tray; both list a 44-pound maximum, need an outlet and start 6 inches above the host. The 48 rises only half an inch higher at the top of its published range. Its wider surface can make a larger screen-and-input layout easier to arrange, but it does not make the desk beneath it deeper or stronger.
For a 36-inch-wide space, the 48 may be needlessly broad; for no-outlet use, either manual model is a better starting point. A full standing desk is the more direct alternative when you need a new frame, a documented absolute floor-to-surface range or a workspace not constrained by a converter sitting on an existing tabletop. Neither electric converter should satisfy a hard static-load requirement on the basis of the 44-pound figure alone.

Start with whether you need a complete desk or a converter for an existing fixed desk, then choose the support layout and surface package. Add exact height, top and cable constraints only when they matter.
