VariDesk Pro Plus 36 Electric review

A powered two-tier desktop converter for a separate fixed-height desk, offered in White, Black and Walnut finish selections under the DC-PP36E product master. The 36-inch upper surface uses a powered vertical gas-spring lift and needs an outlet; the published movement is measured above the host desk.

White finish shown as the page-linked representative view of the Pro Plus 36 Electric family. Black and Walnut are also listed under the same DC-PP36E master; the pictured finish is White, not a Black or Walnut photograph. A useful fit for

Consider it if you already have a stable fixed-height desk, have a nearby outlet, and want a powered converter whose upper surface is 36 inches wide and whose documented lift is relative to that host desk.

The main tradeoff

This is not a complete desk and cannot meet a no-outlet need. The maximum-capacity basis is unspecified; a hard static-load threshold remains unknown. Measure the total moving footprint and do not infer monitor-arm inclusion from the staged image.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you need a complete standing-desk frame, or a converter that sits on a desk you already have?

This model supplies the moving work and keyboard tiers but needs a separate, stable fixed-height host desk. It does not have floor-standing lifting legs.

Explore this need in the finder →
Will an electrical outlet be available for the lift?

The provided adapter and cable power the vertical lift. This converter cannot satisfy a hard no-outlet adjustment requirement.

Explore this need in the finder →
What minimum upper-surface width do you need?

The VariDesk Pro Plus 36 Electric has a 36-inch upper work surface (the model name 48 is rounded to the manufacturer-listed 47¼ inches); it meets a threshold at or below that width, not one above it.

Can you rely on its published maximum as a static-load rating?

No. Vari publishes a 44-pound maximum capacity but the reviewed sheet and instructions do not define a static or dynamic rating basis. A required static threshold remains unconfirmed and must not pass.

The VariDesk Pro Plus 36 Electric is a two-tier converter for someone who already has a stable fixed-height desk and wants a powered way to move the work surface. The “36” describes the upper surface’s width; it is not a 36-inch-deep platform or a complete desk with floor-standing legs. Its small-space appeal is that the host desk remains in place, while the converter supplies the moving work and keyboard tiers.

Vari’s product-page image shows the white Pro Plus 36 Electric raised on a separate desk. The monitor, monitor arm and host desk are scene context, not evidence that they are included. The manufacturer does not identify this image as a photograph or rendering.

Measure both tiers and the desk below

The manufacturer lists a 36-inch-wide upper surface and illustrates a 24¾-inch front-to-back work area when the keyboard tier is considered. Its dimension material gives the keyboard tray as 11¾ inches deep and the base as 16¾ inches deep. Vari recommends an 18-inch host-desk depth with the converter in use. Treat that as the maker’s recommendation, not proof that every existing desk will fit: check the complete moving footprint, the monitor and arm position, and any wall, shelf or adjacent furniture that could obstruct it.

Vari’s selection data lists White (SKU 403502), Black (402932) and Walnut (403305) under the same DC-PP36E Pro Plus 36 Electric master; the variation changes the finish, while each state retains the same product title and “electric vertical lift” description. The image here shows the white selection. The white page-linked specification asset is named 403304, so that resource code is not assumed to be the white order SKU. The instruction sheet identifies 402932, which the current selector maps to Black. These related identifiers explain why the page’s “no assembly” summary conflicts with the attached model-family instructions: the spec calls assembly quick and simple, and the instructions show six screws for attaching the keyboard-tray brackets. Budget for that small assembly step or confirm the exact current carton with Vari.

Powered lift, relative height

Vari describes the mechanism as a powered vertical gas-spring lift. Its published travel is 6 to 19¼ inches above the host desk. That is not an absolute floor-to-keyboard or floor-to-monitor height: add the height of the desk underneath, and remember that the monitor shelf and keyboard tier sit at different levels. Check your seated elbow position and standing monitor eye line against the actual host desk before deciding that a converter will solve the ergonomics of the room.

The unit needs its supplied power adapter plugged into an outlet. It is not an outlet-free spring riser, and no memory-preset count is documented in the reviewed sources. The instructions show up and down controls and explain raising the converter to install the keyboard tray. If your desk cannot be near an outlet, the electrically adjusted Pro Plus is the wrong fit; the manual VariDesk Pro Plus 36 is a separate model, not merely a different control setting.

Capacity and setup need a careful read

Vari publishes a maximum capacity of 44 pounds, but the product page, specification sheet and instructions do not say whether that is a static or dynamic rating or define the usable allowance for a particular monitor, arm and accessory combination. Do not enter 44 pounds as a confirmed static frame rating, and do not assume that the same number describes the capacity of the host desk. If a precise load threshold is essential, ask Vari for the basis and check the desk beneath it too.

There is a manufacturer-source conflict about setup. The short product-page description says “requires no assembly,” while Vari’s linked instructions show the keyboard-tray brackets being fastened with six screws, the adapter being connected and the tray being attached to the raised converter. The sheet calls assembly quick and simple; the instructions say a Phillips screwdriver is not included. Plan on that small assembly step unless Vari confirms the current selected SKU ships differently. The same instruction sheet warns about pinching while lowering and limits use to dry indoor locations.

What the listing does and does not include

The current specification describes an MDF-based surface, monitor-arm compatibility and a 44-pound limit. The instructions’ box list includes the converter, keyboard tray, two brackets, six screws and power adapter/cable; it does not list a monitor arm. Vari’s compatibility statement is useful if you already own an arm, but it is not confirmation that every clamp fits the host desk or that an arm is bundled. The staged photo cannot settle either question. Material species, product weight and the capacity’s static-versus-moving basis remain unspecified in the documents reviewed.

Choose the width and mechanism that match the job

For a single-monitor or modest equipment setup on a host desk, the 36 Electric keeps the upper surface narrower than the 47¼-inch Pro Plus 48 Electric. The 48 is also listed with a slightly taller maximum lift, 19¾ inches above its host, but both electric sizes publish the same 44-pound maximum and the same 6-inch starting lift. A wider top is not a higher load rating. If an outlet is unavailable, the manual Pro Plus 36 has a different spring-assisted mechanism and no electrical lift requirement; if you need a true floor-to-surface range or a new desk frame, compare a complete adjustable desk instead.

This model is most plausible when a stable host desk already fits the room, a 36-inch moving surface is enough, a nearby outlet is available and a powered change of position is more useful than preserving a manual mechanism. Measure the combined tiers and host desk, budget for the conflicting assembly directions, verify the white SKU and included components, and treat the 44-pound figure as a manufacturer maximum whose rating basis is not stated.
